Craig Button, TSN’s scouting director, recently shared that Canada’s roster for the 2030 Winter Olympics is expected to look significantly different from the team that competed in 2026. He explained that factors such as age, the emergence of new talent, and the natural cycle of team renewal will drive these changes.
According to projections for Team Canada in 2030, around half of the roster could consist of players who did not participate in the 2026 Games. This includes young players making their mark in the NHL or other leagues, who are expected to take on more prominent roles in Paris.
Veteran players who were stars in 2026, including those nearing the end of their careers, may no longer be on the roster. For example, players like Sidney Crosby, who will be 42 in 2030, are likely to have retired or be close to it, opening opportunities for younger athletes.
Both in defense and forward positions, rising talents projected as the future of Canadian hockey are expected to step into key roles, providing a mix of youth and experience that could define the team’s competitiveness at the Olympics.
Button emphasized that the 2030 Canadian Olympic team will not be a repeat of 2026, but rather a refreshed squad featuring emerging players who represent the next generation, reflecting the natural evolution of elite national teams.
